Tiger Tracker: Tiger Woods (+6) four-putts for brutal double bogey

Tiger Woods takes on Shinnecock Hills.

The three-time U.S. Open champion is ready to battle at the year’s second major. Will it be a special week for Woods?

Follow his entire opening round, shot by shot, below…

Hole No. 14: Par 4, 536 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:40 p.m. ET): And the wheels are falling off. Tiger takes 3-wood and loses this well right. This is in the deep fescue. This is almost certainly a lay-up, assuming he does find it. Ughhhhhhhh

SECOND SHOT (5:47 p.m. ET): And this is getting really scary. Tiger tries to do too much from that fescue and the grass catches the club, turns it over and that’s a low hook into the gallery left some 100+ yards short of the green.

THIRD SHOT (5:52 p.m. ET): Tiger was in deep fescue rough and he chops this in front of the green and that’s all he could do. He’ll have a pitch from the fairway for par.

AROUND THE GREEN (5:54 p.m. ET): This is a nifty pitch that finishes about 7 feet left of the hole. That left for bogey. We don’t want to get dramatic because it’s only Thursday, but this is getting close to must-make range.

Hole No. 13: Par 4, 374 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:18 p.m. ET): Tiger hits iron off the tee and this is perfect down the left side.

APPROACH SHOT (5:23 p.m. ET): That’s an 8-iron from 147 yards and this is a pin you absolutely cannot get to perched on top of a ridge over a bunker. Tiger plays this safe, as the ball finishes 30 feet under the hole.

ON THE GREEN (5:34 p.m. ET): OH NO! Tiger actually had 40 feet up a slope and this ball comes up 6 feet short. His comebacker never has a chance, as he pushes that and it runs 4 feet. And then he misses that one right as well! That’s a four-putt double bogey and that’s just brutal. After showing so much fight, that’s just a round-killer right there.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 over thru 13 (T-81)

Hole No. 12: Par 4, 462 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:04 p.m. ET): Tiger goes sawed-off 3-wood and that’s pristine down the right side of the fairway.

APPROACH SHOT (5:09 p.m. ET): A 9-iron from 153 yards and this one comes up a bit short. This ball lands two yards short of the green and sticks. That’s not bad, though, he’s about 20 feet from the hole and will likely putt this.

AROUND THE GREEN (5:14 p.m. ET): That was soooo close. This ball bobbles early and ends up missing the cup on the left by an inch or two. The speed is perfect, so this is a simple tap-in.

ON THE GREEN (5:17 p.m. ET): Yep, easy par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 over thru 12 (T-49)

Hole No. 11: Par 3, 157 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:52 p.m. ET): Tiger hates this 8-iron immediately, as he flails this one right. The ball hits the extreme right edge of the green (pin left) and rolls down in the bunker. Not a good strike, but that’s a pretty harmless bunker shot.

AROUND THE GREEN (4:56 p.m. ET): That was average at best. Tiger catches this one a little fat and the ball ends up about 20 feet short. He needs to drain that to save par.

ON THE GREEN (5 p.m. ET): That comes up a good foot short, never had a chance. That’s not a fun bogey to take.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 over thru 11 (T-51)

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 418 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:29 p.m. ET): It’s an iron off the tee for Tiger on this downwind hole, and that’s a mistake. He leaves this one a bit out to the right and while it catches a huge downslope, it bounds into the rough to kill its momentum. This is a really touchy uphill approach to a brutally sloped green. So this is a tough shot from the fairway. This is really going to be a test from the rough.

APPROACH SHOT (4:35 p.m. ET): Tiger actually tried to play this into the right front bunker because this green is just so severe it is virtually impossible to keep it on the surface hitting from the rough. Smart strategy, but Tiger pulls it and his ball comes up short and rolls to the bottom of a slope, leaving him 50 yards in a bowl well below the green.

AROUND THE GREEN (4:40 p.m. ET): That was FANTASTIC. That shot from down there was brutal, a blind pitch where if you come up a little short, the ball comes back to your feet, and a little long means bounding into a low area well beyond the green. Well, Tiger simply gets this one to bounce and roll and come to rest 4 feet past the hole. Magnificent.

ON THE GREEN (4:45 p.m. ET): Tiger’s ball moved as he put his putter behind the ball, so he calls a rules official over. They talk and all good. He then steps up and trickles that in for an unbelievable par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 10 (T-35)

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 487 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:07 p.m. ET): This is actually a 3-wood and it’s a sharp play. Tiger hits one perfectly down the right side, where it hits a slope and kicks forward and left some 20-30 yards down the middle. Funny stuff here, too, as Tiger actually did his classic mid-swing stop, regrouped and then came back and hit that beauty.

APPROACH SHOT (4:15 p.m. ET): This was a 9-iron dead downwind from 159 yards and this one is solid if unspectacular. The ball lands past the hole, hops forward and settles 30 feet past the cup. That’ll leave a quick slicing putt, but you can’t go short of this pin, so that leave is OK.

ON THE GREEN (4:25 p.m. ET): That was a scary, scary putt which Tiger handles pretty well. The ball finishes about 3 feet under the cup and Tiger cleans up for par. A 3-over 38 is a steal after a 4 over through two start.

Stats: 6/7 fairways, 4/9 GIR, 14 putts

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 9 (T-45)

Hole No. 8: Par 4, 439 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:52 p.m. ET): That might be in the dead center of the fairway. Driver again. Man, that club is looking good.

APPROACH SHOT (3:59 p.m. ET): From 112 yards … perfect distance control. The ball hops forward and halts 8 feet right of the cup. A good birdie look here.

ON THE GREEN (4:03 p.m. ET): Not his best. Tiger misses that one low and left and it missed at least a half-ball on the left. Putting still does not look great. Fortunately, his driver has been great, as Tiger has played Even par golf since an opening triple.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 8 (T-45)

Hole No. 7: Par 3, 184 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:40 p.m. ET): An 8-iron for Tiger and … he got away with one. That ball hung a little left, landed on the edge of the green and should’ve funneled into the bunker as the design calls for. But his ball holds up in the fringe before it can drop into the sand. He’s about 30 feet from the hole from that fringe. Big break.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:46 p.m. ET): Tiger opts for a bump-and-run here and that’s textbook. The ball rolls to about a foot under the cup. That’ll be a tap-in.

ON THE GREEN (3:48 p.m. ET): Simple par. After that opening triple, Tiger has looked quite solid. He’s only four back.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 7 (T-48)

Hole No. 6: Par 4, 452 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:19 p.m. ET): Tiger has the driver working today. He seemed a little worried and even gave a little body nudge for his ball to kick right, but he’s just fine. The ball lands on the left edge of the fairway and stays there after rolling about 20 yards forward. Perfect.

APPROACH SHOT (3:30 p.m. ET): Tiger takes 6-iron from 169 yards as the wind whips up from the left, and he holds this off effectively and the ball finishes 15-20 feet below the cup. Pretty and a decent birdie look.

ON THE GREEN (3:35 p.m. ET): Not a bad putt, but Tiger misses that a little low and left. An easy tap-in par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 6 (T-51)

Hole No. 5: Par 5, 592 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:59 p.m. ET): This driver is bashed down the right side of the fairway. Tiger needed to do that. He can go for this green in two.

APPROACH SHOT (3:08 p.m. ET): Tiger goes for a knockdown 4-iron from 259 yards and he didn’t catch it quite right. It was on a fine line but he needed more on it. The ball harmlessly hops in front of the green some 20-25 yards from the pin. He leaves himself a harmless eagle pitch from there.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:14 p.m. ET): Another nifty short game shot. He simply gets this to roll about 4 feet under the cup. That leaves him with a great birdie look.

ON THE GREEN (3:16 p.m. ET): There we go! Tiger buries this one in the back of the cup and we have a birdie! We’re in business.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 5 (T-67)

Hole No. 4: Par 4, 478 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:40 p.m. ET): Another driver and this one is not in the fairway, but it looked pretty solid. We believe it’s in the first cut on the right, and if so, that’s just fine.

APPROACH SHOT (2:46 p.m. ET): Tiger got unlucky on the tee shot. his ball got into the rough and finished just left of a bunker in an awkward sidehill lie. With the ball well under his feet, Tiger tries to draw one in, but the ball hangs a bit right, lands on the green and bounds over. He’ll have to scramble again.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:48 p.m. ET): That was pretty. Tiger nips that one beautifully from the short grass beyond the green and the ball finishes 18 inches under the cup. Another tap-in par coming.

ON THE GREEN (2:50 p.m. ET): Yep another par. Tiger’s starting to get back in the groove and he has a par 5 now.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 over thru 4 (T-81)

Hole No. 3: Par 4, 510 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:20 p.m. ET): Driver … that was beautiful. A nice cut that races down the right side of the fairway and finishes just in the short grass. Way down there where you want it. Tiger needed that.

APPROACH SHOT (2:28 p.m. ET): Tiger plays a knockdown that ends up solid. It looked like the ball would stop 12 feet left and beyond the cup, but it continues to trickle just off the edge of the green. But he is just off the green and has about 20 feet for birdie.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:34 p.m. ET): That one never had a chance. It was on a decent line but comes up about 2 feet short. It should be a par, though.

ON THE GREEN (2:35 p.m. ET): Tiger taps in. Well, he’s improving rapidly each hole, from triple bogey to bogey to par! Otherwise, there are few positives so far.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 over thru 3 (T-74)

Hole No. 2: Par 3, 252 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:10 p.m. ET): Well after that gut punch, Tiger takes 2-iron and hits what looks like a solid shot but gets unlucky. The ball lands 25 feet left of the pin, bounds beyond the hole and appears it will stay on the green but trickles over the back. He’s in fairway probably about 40-50 feet from the hole.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:15 p.m. ET): Tiger goes putter from off the green again here and that’s solid touch. He leaves this one about 4-5 feet short of the cup. That’s a good chance to make par.

ON THE GREEN (2:17 p.m. ET): That was simply bad. No sugarcoating here. That was always low and right and never threatened to hit the cup. That’s a bogey and Tiger is already 4 over.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 over thru 2 (T-72)

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 407 yards

OFF THE TEE (1:47 p.m. ET): Iron off the tee, right down the middle. No nerves there.

APPROACH SHOT (1:52 p.m. ET): Not good. Tiger airmails this one from 151 yards over the green. That’s a bad miss. The approach shot was into the wind, which means this will be a snake of a downhill chip/pitch with not a lot of green to work with. Also, Tiger is well below the level of the green.

AROUND THE GREEN (1:57 p.m. ET): He compounds the mistake. Tiger tries to get cute with that one and the ball lands on the edge of the back of the green, barely moves forward and then rolls back off the false back. It doesn’t come back down to his feet, but the ball does trickle left and off the green. He now has to get up and down for bogey.

AROUND THE GREEN (2 p.m. ET): This is a nightmare. Tiger takes putter here and hits it fat! Seriously. The ball doesn’t make the green and rolls back about 10 feet in front of him. He’s off the green still and playing his fifth shot.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:02 p.m. ET): Finally Tiger gets it together somewhat. He putts again and the ball gets on the green and races about 8 feet by the cup. That left for double bogey.

ON THE GREEN (2:05 p.m. ET): Tiger misses low and right on that putt, he taps in for a triple bogey. Unbelievable. Dude was in the middle of the fairway, too. Probably Tiger’s first opening triple bogey in a major since the 2003 Open Championship. He ended up finishing T-4 at that event, for the record.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 1 (T-50)
